Article review: Treating Diseases or Promoting Health? Lessons from a WHO Bulletin Perspective on Systems Thinking

Abstract

The study in the WHO Bulletin does not propose new health promotion methods or organizational models, but rather encourages a shift in perspective and, through this, the gradual transformation of health-determining systems. Health outcomes are determined by the interplay of complex social, economic, environmental, and health systems, which can only be understood and shaped through a systems approach. The most important lesson of this study, therefore, is perhaps not the presentation of a new method or model, but the recognition that promoting health is not primarily about implementing programs, but rather about strengthening the capacity of health-shaping systems to learn and adapt. This approach may also open up new opportunities for public health in Hungary.
