A new idea in connection with methane of the Mecsek Coal Basin, Hungary

Abstract

The author made known the properties of the Mecsek coal and the results of the researches connected with methane in the Mecsek coal. According to the author, most of the methane in the coal is attached by hydrogen bond. This new idea is supported by the following facts: a) the adsorption-desorption processes are irreversible, which indicates chemosorption, b) the measured activation energy corresponds to that of hydrogen bond, c) the methane was adsorbed on coal with greater quantity as compared to nitrogen, d) the new idea explains the behaviour of the coal during mining.
