Innovative Health Communication: The Paradox of Information Abundance — Health Communication in the Age of Algorithms
Abstract
Introduction: Over the past two decades, access to health information has expanded radically, yet this has not automatically made it easier for the public to navigate health-related information. The explanation lies in the transformation of the information environment: the vast majority of health content on social media is produced without professional oversight, reach is determined by algorithms, and credible messages must compete for attention with entertaining content. The phenomenon of the "infodemic"—elevated to a fundamental public health concept by the WHO during the COVID-19 pandemic—indicates that today, the information environment must be treated as an independent determinant of health.
Perspective: This paper argues that the role of health communication has inverted: the bottleneck is no longer a lack of information, but rather its oversupply—credibility and attention have become scarce resources instead of access. Within this framework, the text reinterprets the concepts of health literacy (Nutbeam) and mental health literacy (Jorm), reviews the evidence on the effectiveness of evidence-based online health communication, and then demonstrates this thesis using the case study of ADHD. ADHD serves as a condensed example of the infodemic paradox: while the condition is massively underdiagnosed—especially in adulthood—it is one of the most-viewed health topics on social media, where a significant portion of the content is misleading. Therefore, the demand is a given; the question is whether it will be satisfied by credible or misleading supply.
Conclusions: Today, managing health misinformation and competing for attention are public health competencies. It is not enough for credible health communication to merely be present on social media; it must be competitive by adapting to the logic of the platforms through consciously designed content. The principles presented here can be applied to the communication of any health condition. This paper is the first in a four-part series that, in subsequent installments, will discuss issues of message design, messenger credibility, communication strategies against misinformation, and impact measurement.
