Article review: Is Mental Health Shaped by Structural Social Factors?
Abstract
The article reviews global evidence on the social determinants of mental health, showing that mental disorders are deeply linked to socioeconomic inequalities, childhood adversity, and discrimination. The authors propose a three-level framework – individual, community, and structural – to guide prevention and mental health promotion strategies. They emphasize that improving mental health requires addressing social injustice and systemic inequities through community-based and policy-level interventions. The study highlights prevention, equity, and intersectoral collaboration as key pillars for achieving sustainable mental wellbeing.
