Abstract

On the occasion of the Year of Hungarian Science this paper provides an overview of the changing conditions and turning points that have determined the investigation (research and exploration) of the depth of the earth beneath Hungary, over the past two centuries. The aim of the paper is to provide background knowledge of scientific and professional history to facilitate strategic thinking about the future of Hungarian geoscience. Geoscience must seek answers to substantive and concrete questions, and not passively adapt to global trends. Hungarian geoscience has been able to serve the country best when it receives serious tasks, financial and political supports from the state. Since the key to the security of energy, mineral raw materials, soil, water and the environment largely lies in the earth sciences, it can be expected that decision-makers will again recognize the importance of Hungary’s terrestrial natural resources and the better knowledge of geo-environment.
