The system of family names, their use, and changes to them in a linguistic-cultural contact situation
Apart from stimulating borrowings of lexical items, linguistic-cultural relations also elicit mutual influences of name systems in contact. These relations might determine the development of the family name system in a language community, but they may affect the order of surnames and Christian names in a language as well. Differences in the orthographical, phonological, grammatical and semantic structures of the family name stocks in contact are manifested in spontaneous modifications as well as deliberate changes of surnames, partly resulting in establishing new (types of) family names. In the background of these changes, at the same time, the pragmatic, sociolinguistic, language-ideological relations of potential and actual name use must also be taken into consideration. Relevant features of name assimilation are observed in this paper with respect to the name systems of different languages spoken in the multinational historical Hungary. The author focuses on the free or compelled processes of Magyarization of surnames, i.e. adoption of Hungarian(-sounding) family names, exploring the analogical influence of name models on one another. The paper finally presents the effects of these processes on the system and structure of Hungarian family names.
