Abstract

Beregvidék

Names of geographical regions constitute a special group in the system of Hungarian place-names. They are originated in historical and social events, they are used to identify larger areas, and they are subject to continuous changes. In Sub-Carpathia (Ukraine) many new names of geographical regions have been born recently, one of which is Beregvidék, the major concern of the present study. This name denotes an administrative unit. It is the official, artificial name giving that played an important role in its formation, and the name is used in official documents and in daily papers. The name form might have been influenced by analogy (see Ung-vidék). The name fits into the system of Hungarian names of geographical regions, despite its unique feature of having a name of a county as anterior constituent. Whether or not the name will be generally accepted and used in the future depends on the speakers.
