Theological Horizons of Liminality. The Transformation of the Church at the Boundary of Order and Chaos - Part 1
Abstract
The study “Ubi ecclesia, ubi theologian?” addresses the complex positioning of the church during liminal periods of transformation, wherein established orders disintegrate and emerging structures remain in flux. It employs an interdisciplinary methodology, integrating systematic theology, anthropology, and philosophy to offer a nuanced framework for analyzing identity, mission, and renewal in transitional contexts. The liminality concept, rooted in cultural anthropology (Arnold van Gennep, Victor Turner) and philosophical traditions (Eric Voegelin’s metaxy), is a central analytical tool. The study explores how these liminal thresholds can generate crises of identity and institutional coherence but simultaneously foster opportunities for creative renewal, mainly through the dynamic interplay of order, chaos, and openness to transcendence. It emphasizes the church's role as an active participant in shaping societal transformation and spiritual resilience by preserving theological continuity while responding to contemporary challenges. Biblical narratives of transitional experiences and the critical perspectives of thinkers like Tillich, Rahner, and Kierkegaard further contextualize the theological implications of liminality.
