An Empirical and Theological Examination of Pastoral Calling and Recruitment in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hungary

Abstract

The study examines the question of pastoral calling and ministerial recruitment in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hungary from both theological and empirical perspectives. The research is based on a questionnaire survey with 145 participants, analysing responses from
Lutheran pastors as well as individuals currently enrolled in or having completed theological ministerial training. The study seeks to explore the backgrounds from which candidates for the pastoral ministry emerge, how the sense of calling develops, and who and what processes contribute to its strengthening. The results indicate that the calling is most often received during secondary school years and is closely related to family, congregational, and broader community experiences. Personal relationships play a decisive role, particularly the presence of a congregational pastor. According to the responses, motivations for choosing the ministry are primarily connected to God’s call and guidance, while a strong emphasis is also placed on working with people and serving the community. The study interprets the notion of calling within the theological framework of vocatio and reads the empirical findings in light of this perspective. Key areas highlighted by the research include the sustainability and credibility of the pastoral vocation, the role of congregational communities, the significance of youth ministry, as well as questions of personal accompaniment and theological education. The findings suggest that the issue of ministerial recruitment is closely related to the quality of congregational life and to how the pastoral vocation is experienced in practice.
