The Pastoral Career: Navigating Between Existing and Missing Landmarks

Abstract

The training of new pastors is a shared concern of the Lutheran church community, linking vocation and formation with the church’s tasks and goals. The complexity of pastoral ministry lies in the fact that it is both deeply personal and a matter of broad public interest. Demographic trends and trends in further education will be decisive in the process of applying for pastoral training, as will the fact that the number of those who chose a pastoral career is in decline throughout Western culture. As a generational phenomenon, emphasis must be placed on the mutually supportive effects of the contexts of the calling for ministry (family, congregation, school), highlighting the importance of the family community and parental role models. Sustained and consistent spiritual and communal building is needed within the church, as the pastoral ministry cannot be separated from changes in the life of the church. Formation is the twin of vocation; as part of Christian discipleship, it is a complex issue in pastoral training as well. The assessment of individual gifts and charismas is in flux. The definition and application of professional knowledge and skills (competencies) is more than a system of expectations: it can also serve as a reassuring anchor for the pastor and open up space for the formation of others as disciples. The transformation of social and church spaces, as well as the rediscovery of millennia-old biblical and spiritual knowledge is also of fundamental importance in this search for a path forward.
