The Seven Scenes of Joseph Weeping
A Biblical Novella from a Female Theological Perspective
Abstract
The narrative of Joseph (Gen 37–50) is a very human, deeply emotional, dramatic story. We follow the protagonist’s development of self-awareness, his readiness to confront his past, to come to terms with his own fate, his brothers and his father. Joseph’s feminine traits are to be seen in his care for his family and for the country, and behind his character is the personification of the wisdom as woman from the book of Proverbs (Prov 8) and the ’wife of noble character’ in Prov 31. Joseph weeps seven times in the process of meeting and reconciling with his family, these moments show a chiastic editing in the narrative.
