The Creed and the Council of Nicea
The Liturgical Memory and Heritage of the First Ecumenical Council in the Orthodox Tradition
Abstract
In the Orthodox tradition, not only the theological foundation of the Church, the Trinitological and Christological Dogmas, the first Creed and canons – that define the order, the organization and the life of the church – are connected to the memory of the first ecumenical council, but several feasts also. The rich tradition of the feast of the memory of the Holy Fathers from the first Council includes the liturgical program, the hymnography, the Synaxarion, the iconography of the feasts and the hagiography of the saints who participated in the council. This paper presents aspects of the Orthodox liturgical tradition central to the practice and liturgical life of the church to this day.
