An analysis of prison architectural styles, advantages and disadvantages

Abstract

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of prison architectural styles, examining the design philosophies, operational logic, and social impacts of panoptic, vertical, new-generation open, and supermax prisons, while the paper also reviews the institutionalization of incarceration from a historical perspective, from ancient precedents to modern reforms, including the development of the Hungarian prison system. The central question is how architectural design influences security, staffing requirements and inmate rehabilitation, whereby the research demonstrates that humanitarian, rehabilitation-oriented architectural solutions yield more favorable reintegration outcomes, while maintaining security remains a key challenge.
