An aging prison population: Organizational challenges and solutions in the management of geriatric inmates
Abstract
The systematic aging of the prison population is a demonstrable trend in Hungary, the European Union, and the prison systems of the United States alike, fundamentally reshaping correctional practice in the 21st century. The overarching aim of the present study is therefore to examine how demographic aging processes observed in society affect the organization and institutional capacities of correctional systems, and to explore what organizational, legal, and ethical solutions can be applied to meet the specific needs of geriatric inmates. Through a comparative analysis of international experiences – specifically those of the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France – and Hungarian practice, the study subsequently presents the structural and functional challenges of managing geriatric prisoners, the possibilities and limitations of organizing their care, and the directions of necessary future developments.
