Road safety of autonomous vehicles
Abstract
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) will have a significant impact on our lives in many areas, such as road transport, passenger transport, and freight transport. AVs have the potential to reduce accidents, traffic, and emissions at the same time. Various developments are still needed for the widespread application and to achieve accident-free transportation. For this reason,
it is particularly important to investigate the safety and reliability of AVs. The article analyzes road accident data and potential safety benefits of AVs and compares them with conventional vehicles. It also examines the type, the location, and the causes of accidents, as well as the dynamics of the accident. The article also addresses development opportunities
and challenges, such as the risk of cyberattack or the necessary improvement of machine perception.
