Investigation of the traffic safety of track-bound vehicles running on onstreet urban light rail system in the city of Szeged
Abstract
In 2021, the fleet of fixed rail vehicles in Szeged were extended by a new type of vehicle, the tram-train, which was previously unknown in Hungary. The colour scheme of the tram-train is very different from what is usual in the urban environment. In the year following its introduction, 2022, the frequency of registered road accidents was relatively higher than for other types of tram. A questionnaire survey with a sample of 453 respondents was carried out to find out how this new design is perceived by the public. We used eye-camera surveys to
analyse whether we can see any differences in the eye movements of road users with different tram types. We conducted field measurements to see which parts of the tram train drivers focus on most when looking in the rear-view mirror before a hypothetical left turn. Based on these studies, recommendations were made for the colour scheme of tram-trains.
