Examination of the development potential of the Budapest–Zagreb rail link, with a focus on highspeed transport
Abstract
While a significant length of the railway line connecting the capitals of Croatia and Hungary has already been renewed in both countries, the journey times by road are still more favourable. The studies carried out have yielded important results in terms of improving the competitiveness of railways. Currently, international trains take about an hour longer to travel between the two capitals than buses, while cars provide an even faster option, reducing the journey time by almost a further hour. There are also difficulties on the demand side, with little traffic between the two countries in winter, while huge peaks form in summer.
