The impact of the Budapest Agglomeration Railway Strategy on the feasibility of military railway transport tasks
Abstract
The package of measures proposed by the Budapest Agglomeration Railway Strategy (BAVS) can have a short-term and long-term impact not only on rail passenger and freight transport. Getting to know the tasks provides an opportunity to get to know the less public parts and to explore civilian and military connections. As a result of developments mainly related to passenger transport, the expected increase in suburban traffic on the lines leading to the capital may reduce the possibility of railroad freight traffic, including military train traffic. The BAVS creates an interesting ambivalence: while on the one hand the improvements of the notoriously critical sections of the railways cannot wait any longer, the increased passenger traffic resulting from the possible development may cause a problem in the logistics of the Hungarian Armed Forces in the implementation of rail transports of strategic importance. An examination of this duality, as well as the proposals made, will shed light on the preliminary resolution of the arising problems.
