Current Issues in Digital Road Management – Digital Twin Applications in Road Transport
Abstract
Transportation systems all around the world are undergoing a transformation process whose scale and depth cannot be compared to previous industrial and technological changes. This transition is driven by three parallel global megatrends: digitalization, automation, and urbanization. In transportation systems, digitalization primarily means a radical transformation in the generation, sharing, and use of data. Sensors, IoT devices, in-vehicle systems, smart infrastructure components, and user devices provide access to previously unimaginable amounts and levels of detail of data in real time. This article seeks to answer the question of how this data could be used in the future.
