Requirements for ballast water systems of seagoing ships
Abstract
The most environmentally sensitive area of maritime shipping is the protection against foreign organisms introduced in ballast water by intensive maritime cargo transport and the ballasting of ships. Since ballast is unavoidable for ships not loaded with cargo (the trim, heel and stability of the ship are safety factors), the only option left is to reduce the organic matter content of the ballast water in the ballast water tanks, to exchange the ballast water according to the purpose during the voyage, to treat the incoming and discharged ballast water, and more specifically, to manage the ballast water.References
