Author Guidelines

ACTA ZOOLOGICA ACADEMIAE SCIENTIARUM HUNGARICAE is an international journal of animal taxonomy and ecology.

The journal is open-access under the Creative Commons licence CC BY-NC. Published articles are freely available on the Internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles.  The only restriction is that only non-commercial uses are permitted.

Submission of a manuscript implies that it contains new, unpublished information, and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. This Publisher does not request article processing or page charges from Authors except for colour printing.

Papers must be written in English using British spelling, and be original contributions to the fields of animal taxonomy, systematics, zoogeography or ecology. Authors whose native language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscripts read by a native English-speaking colleague before submission. Short communications will not be considered. All manuscripts must be submitted at http://ojs3.mtak.hu/index.php/actazool/.

Authors are asked to keep their communications as concise as possible. Footnotes should be avoided or minimized, and Italics should not be used for emphasis. Lines should be continuously numbered using the line numbering function in the word processing software (Microsoft Word, Pages, LibreOffice Writer, etc.).

The Title should be followed by the names and addresses of all authors. Full author names (including given and family names) should be provided. Authors’ names should be in small capitals. The affiliation should include the complete mailing address and email of all authors. Please also provide the ORCID numbers of all authors. If you do not have one yet, please register at http://orcid.org/.

A running title of no more than 30 characters (including spaces) should be supplied.

The Abstract should be a brief but clear summary of the background and motivation, methods and results (if applicable) of the paper and should also include conclusions. ALL new taxonomic names must be mentioned in the abstract, and ALL taxonomic actions (e.g. lectotype/neotype designations, subsequent type species designations, new combinations, changes in taxonomic rank, falsifications of previous lectotype/neotype/subsequent type species designations, new synonymy) must be also mentioned. If the author list of a new taxon is not exactly the same as that of the paper, authors of the taxon must be included in the abstract. The abstract should be no longer than 200 words and should not contain references.

Please provide up to five Keywords describing the content. Avoid using words in the title and abstract.

Taxonomic authorities (authors + year of description) of genus- and species-group taxa must follow first mention throughout the text (in the abstract, and for family-group names optional). Full reference of those must be provided in the reference list. Authors of plant species names need not be given. When works are cited for this taxonomic purpose in the text, the authors are to be written in normal case (not small caps) and separated from the date with a comma.

The Introduction should contain a brief summary of the relevant literature and state the reasons for performing the research.

The Material and methods section should provide sufficient information to permit the repetition of the research. A technical description of the applied methods should only be given if the methods are new.

Results should be presented concisely. Do not present the same results in both table and figure format. The Results section should not be used for discussion.

In the Taxonomy part, taxonomic hierarchy must be provided (family, genus; subfamily and subgenus and higher categories can be also given whenever necessary). Citation of the original description must be provided under genera in the taxonomic hierarchy. Type species of genera must be provided with the mode of designation.

The Discussion should be separate from the Results section. It should interpret results and point out their significance by relating them to the available literature. In taxonomic revisions, this is where the identification key should be placed.

The Acknowledgements should list obtained permits and funds supporting the research. Please keep the Acknowledgements as concise as possible.

References. Follow the Harvard system: authors’ names and initials, year of publication (in parentheses), colon, the title of the article, en dash, the full name of the journal, the volume (in bold), and the first and last pages of the article (separated by an en dash), DOI number (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1046/j.1420-9101.2002.00375.x) (check DOI numbers at https://doi.crossref.org/simpleTextQuery), e.g.

Author names must be written in sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs.

For books and book chapters: author name(s), date of publication (in parentheses), colon, title, edition, en dash, publisher’s name, the place of publication and page reference, e.g.

References to papers ‘in press’ must mean that the article has been accepted for publication. Reference to papers in preparation or submitted is not permitted. Please instead refer in the text to ‘personal communication’ or to ‘unpublished work’. Please do not italicize taxon names in the References.

In the text, references should be given as Rᴏɴᴋᴀʏ and Fɪʙɪɢᴇʀ (1993), or (Rᴏɴᴋᴀʏ & Fɪʙɪɢᴇʀ 1993, Pᴀᴘᴘ 1995), Mᴀʀsʜᴀʟʟ (1992) or (Mᴀʀsʜᴀʟʟ 1992). When a citation includes more than two authors, e.g. Gʀᴇʏ, Bʟᴀᴄᴋ and Wʜɪᴛᴇ , the paper should be referred to in the text as Gʀᴇʏ et al., provided that this is not ambiguous. If papers by the same author(s) in the same year are cited, they should be distinguished by the italics letters, a, b, c, etc., e.g. Mᴀʀsʜᴀʟʟ (1992a). Author names must be written in sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs in the text as well (except for taxonomic authorities).

All necessary illustrations should accompany the manuscript but should not be inserted in the text. All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals (use Arial typeface) in the order in which they are referred to in the text. Only good quality and high enough resolution (min. 400 dpi) figures will be accepted. Small illustrations must be grouped into plates. An explanation of lettering and symbols should be given in the figure caption and only exceptionally in the figures. Scales must be indicated on micrographs, not by magnifications in the legends. The following symbols should be used on line drawing: □, ○, ●, ◊.The preferred format for submitted digital figures are EPS, AI, CDR, WMF, EMF or TIF, PSD, JPEG (only high quality).

Legends to figures should be incorporated into the text of the caption. They should give sufficient information to make the illustration comprehensible without reference to the text.

Tables and appendices should be constructedto be intelligible without reference to the text and numbered using Arabic numerals. Each table should be provided with an explanatory caption and each column should carry an appropriate heading. Units of measure should always be indicated (metric units are preferred). All tables and figures must be referred to in the text.

Only standard abbreviations should be used. Arbitrary abbreviations and jargon will not be accepted.

Author(s) of species and generic names and the year of publication must be provided when the scientific name of any animal species or genus is first mentioned, and a full reference most be provided of this in the reference list. Authors of plant species names need not be given. The name of the author need not be provided in the title. Genus and species names should be in Italics except in the references.

ZooBank registration: Each publication introducing new taxonomic names will be registered in ZooBank (https://zoobank.org/) by the Editor-in-Chief. ZooBank registration code for the publication will be provided on the first page of the paper, and ZooBank registration codes for each species will be provided below the species name in the Taxonomy section.

Manuscripts not following the above guidelines will not be considered.

Page proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking. Corrections to the proofs must be restricted to printer’s errors. Any substantial alterations other than these may be charged to the author. Authors are requested to return their corrected proofs within 72 h to facilitate rapid publication.

Reprints or extra copies of a given issue and extra costs for colour illustrations must be paid by the authors. They should be ordered from the Journal Manager (perego.azh@gmail.com) no later than at submission of the final copy of an accepted manuscript.
