Abstract

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has prepared four regional assessments between 2015 and 2018. This work presents the regional assessment of Europe and Central Asia, which was produced by 118 authors based on 4750 sources of information. The main conclusions of the assessment are: (i) the decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services is worrysome in most taxon groups and ecosystems, (ii) the main reason for the decline is land use change (intensification of agriculture and forestry, urbanisation), but the role of climate change is also increasing, (iii) if ongoing trends continue in the future, the current targets of biodiversity and sustainability will be impossible to achieve, and (iv) mainstreaming biodiversity conservation in policy and its better integration into sectoral policies are essential to slow down or halt the negative tendencies.
