Abstract

Over the millennia, many bat species have found their home in man-made structures. These species can tolerate human presence, take advantage of the microclimatic benefits of buildings and thus have an advantage over obligate cave-dwellers. However, besides its several benefits, the built environment also poses numerous threats to bats. The external lighting of buildings, the application of chemicals for wood preservation, the sealing of cavities, and collisions with flat surfaces are all potential hazards. The destruction of either hibernating or maternity colonies during renovations also occurs. Our suggestion provides professional guidance for the renovation of bat-inhabited buildings, outlining the correct timing of construction activities, bat-friendly technical solutions, and the wood preservatives that are safe to use.
