Abstract

Place-names of village Istensegíts

Istensegíts was a Hungarian settlement in Bukovina (Rumania) between 1777 and 1941. Most of its former inhabitants now live in Hungary and in many other places around the world. The author groups the place-names of the former village according to the following system: names of parts of the village, names of cemeteries, names of streets and street parts, names of buildings, regional names, names of wells in the field, and names of bodies of water. As the Székelys of Bukovina had been surrounded by a foreign language for a long period of time, not only their dialect, but also their place-names had been affected by the Rumanian language. As a result, most categories mentioned above contain words of Rumanian origin. The place-names also demonstrate dialectal features, made evident in the article by the phonetic recordings of the names.
