Abstract

Nicknames in village Som

The author examines the nicknames from the village Som, a Hungarian settlement in district Beregszász (Ukraine), near the Hungarian border. The majority of the more than 200 nicknames collected serve to differentiate people bearing the surnames Ködöböcz and Nagy (Hentes 'butcher' Ködöböcz, Kis 'Little' Nagy Béla), and are mostly typical of men. Nicknames in most of the cases refer to physical characteristics or to occupations. Regarding their use, nicknames consist of one or two, sometimes three elements, and a great many of them are inheritable.
