Names for routes of rock-climbing in Kis-Gerecse

This study presents a neglected field of onomastics by exploring the world of names for routes of rock-climbing. After some remarks on the general characteristics of these names the author focuses on the names in Kis-Gerecse, a popular scene of rock-climbing in Hungary. The major concern of the investigation is to identify the motivation of the names. Names most often have been motivated by the shape, the colour or some other characteristics of the cliffs; but experiences, events observed during climbing are also frequently expressed in the names, often in a humorous way, in the form of a pun. Some names owe their motivation to films, movie stars, fairy creatures, rock bands, pieces of music, books, people, and to the beauty or difficulty of the route. Finally, the author discusses how new names are influenced by existing ones.
