Expanding the Library of Ádám Patachich, Archbishop of Kalocsa
A Book-Collecting Network between Kalocsa, Pest, Vienna, and Rome (1776–1784)
Abstract
The study examines the expansion of the library of Ádám Patachich, archbishop of Kalocsa, in the last third of the eighteenth century, with particular attention to the intermediary networks that enabled book acquisitions between 1776 and 1784 along the nodal axis of Kalocsa, Pest, Vienna, and Rome. Patachich belonged to that segment of the Hungarian high clergy who, through a deliberate strategy of book collecting, established significant ecclesiastical libraries. The research focuses on the individuals who played an active role in enlarging the collection, carrying out the search, ordering, transport, and processing of books on the archbishop’s behalf.
Based on the systematic analysis of surviving correspondence, invoices, and book catalogues, the study reconstructs the functioning of Patachich’s book procurement network. It presents, among others, the roles of Giuseppe Garampi, papal nuncio in Vienna, the librarian András Fogarassy, the Pest-based librarian Küffner, as well as book agents and commercial booksellers in Pest, Rome, and Vienna. The activities of these intermediaries not only provide insight into contemporary practices of the book trade but also reveal the structure of the archbishop’s elite informational and cultural connections.
The investigation demonstrates that the expansion of the library served simultaneously the needs of ecclesiastical learning, education, and secular scholarship, while also supporting Patachich’s cultural self-representation and patronal identity. The analysis of this book-collecting network thus contributes to a deeper understanding of the international embeddedness of the eighteenth-century Hungarian ecclesiastical elite and the transregional circulation of book culture.
