Abstract

The process of improving the compatibility of the national rail networks of the Member States began in the early 1990s, with the ultimate aim of creating an efficient and competitive rail network covering the whole of the Union: the single European railway area. Rail policy is part of the EU’s transport policy, which aims to achieve interconnected, sustainable, inclusive, safe and secure mobility within the Union.
