Abstract

The 30-year history of bilateral relations between Ukraine and Hungary has undergone a major transformation. Starting from the initial priorities of good neighbourhood relationship and security policy, these relations have been transformed in light of strong trade relations, and subsequent efforts and sanctions made to preserve the national minority rights of the Hungarians living in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. Looking back to the last three decades, the current position of the international and bilateral relations between the two states has an impact on the daily lives and activities of the population living in the Ukrainian-Hungarian transborder region. Based on the semi-structured interviews we have conducted, the deteriorating bilateral relations between the two states seemingly have not (yet) deteriorated the Ukrainian-Hungarian cross-border cooperation. The current force of social cohesion and the interdependence of the two counties have so far proved stronger in the face of diplomatic disagreements.
