Landscape and Tourism Development Opportunities in and Around Uppony
Abstract
We have carried out two studies in the Uppony area, in 2020 and 2022, as part of degree course in the Master of Landscape Architecture programme. We have found that, as in other areas in economic and social decline, the potential for tourism development based on a rich natural and cultural heritage is seen as a key to the survival of the area for local entrepreneurs and residents.
Our research has shown that the development of tourism is conditional on the development of other areas, and is therefore inseparable from, for example, infrastructure and human resource development. And the efforts of small villages on their own can be more fruitful if they work together. Therefore, tourism planning cannot be separated from the simultaneous assessment and development of other sectors, which highlights the need for a multisectoral approach and landscape thinking in the development of tourism development proposals.
