Abstract

Going “green” is a multifaceted concept that focuses on alternative, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technologies and energy consumption. This article presents that correctional facilities can play a large role in protecting the environment and sustaining natural resources. As homes and businesses have gone green by adopting environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible practices, prisons also can become green by sustainable practices. According to the article, green prisons have dual benefits: environmentally friendly prisons can decrease the cost of incarceration and also teach prisoners valuable skills that they can use after prison and would give them better chance of avoiding recidivism. Keywords: “green prison”, eco-friendly, cost-effective, green projects
