Aims and Scope

Uránia/Urania is an interdisciplinary open-access journal published by the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Hungary. It has been appearing since 2021 in both print and online formats on a semester basis, published simultaneously in Hungarian and English. The journal features essays, scholarly articles, interviews, reviews, work presentations, artistic reflections, and other writings related to theatre, film, media, and media studies, both in national and international contexts.
 
Its target audience includes researchers, experts, creators, artists, and university students in theatre, film, and media studies, as well as the general public interested in these fields.
 
The journal publishes original manuscripts that have not been previously published elsewhere and are not under consideration or submitted for publication to any other journal or publication. For detailed information on publication procedures, please refer to the information available on the journal’s website. By submitting a manuscript, the author automatically accepts these guidelines.
 
The publisher does not charge authors for the evaluation of submitted manuscripts.
 
The journal publishes articles under a diamond open access model, meaning that the publisher publishes the articles directly with open access and does not charge any article processing charges (APCs). Articles are available immediately upon publication on the journal’s website and may be used under the terms of the Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license. The journal allows authors to retain full copyright without restriction and to keep unrestricted publishing rights. In accordance with SHERPA/RoMEO principles, authors may deposit their articles without restriction in institutional or other repositories.

Peer Review Process Guidelines

Uránia/Urania publishes original manuscripts that have not been previously published elsewhere and are not under consideration or submitted to other journals or publications. In accordance with its publication principles, all submitted materials undergo a thorough evaluation process.

In the first step, the editorial office conducts an initial editorial screening of submitted materials. During this process, it is assessed whether the articles are relevant and aligned with the journal’s aims and thematic scope. The originality and overall quality of the manuscripts are also examined, and the editorial office determines whether the submission belongs to the category of scholarly articles or other, artistically oriented writings. The Editorial Board may reject a manuscript without further review if it does not meet the formal or substantive requirements or if its topic falls outside the journal’s scope.

Other artistic writings (including essays, interviews, reviews, work presentations, artistic reflections, and other texts related to theatre, film, and media) undergo a single-blind peer review process.

Scholarly articles undergo a double-blind peer review process: two experts in the relevant field evaluate the manuscript, assessing its strengths, weaknesses, and potential for publication.

The reviewers’ feedback is communicated to the author(s) by the editors. The decision may be acceptance, acceptance with minor revisions, acceptance with major revisions, or rejection. If revisions are required, the editors provide suggestions and guidance to help the author(s) improve the manuscript.

Authors may appeal the Editorial Board’s decision to the Editor-in-Chief, who will then review the decision.

Publication Ethics

The leadership of the University of Theatre and Film Arts, in line with the objectives set out during the institutional model change and in the founding charter, is committed to fostering the interest of our students, lecturers, and researchers in achieving and disseminating artistic and scholarly results that present the values of universal and national culture.

The University of Theatre and Film Arts provides a platform in its journal Uránia/Urania for its colleagues—as well as external authors—to publish their artistic and scholarly works within the institution’s own publication framework.

The aim of the journal is to play a central role in the dissemination of research and publications integrating theatre, film, and media studies both nationally and internationally. While we seek to provide a forum for authors, our primary goal is also to strengthen the legitimacy of discourse surrounding artistic and scholarly fields that shape our national culture within both domestic and international academia, offering our readers alternatives to prevailing prejudices and entrenched assumptions related to these topics.

The journal publishes original, previously unpublished works that comply with the principles of academic ethics. Submitted manuscripts must adhere to the COPE principles (https://publicationethics.org/glossary), and scholarly contributions must follow the rules of empirical or theoretical research methodologies. At the same time, in accordance with the mission of the journal, we also provide space for essayistic and other artistic writings, as well as interviews; however, these works must also present original content and follow a transparent methodology and structure. All submissions must accurately reference the sources used, whether scholarly or artistic works.

The author—and in the case of co-authorship, all authors—must approve the publication. The publisher does not charge authors for the evaluation of submitted manuscripts or for publication upon acceptance, nor does it pay fees for publication. The journal is published by the University of Theatre and Film Arts from its own resources, which may be supplemented by grants and other external funding.

 

Publication and Authorship

The editorial board does not guarantee acceptance of submitted manuscripts and does not retain rejected manuscripts.

 

Editorial Responsibilities

The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board are responsible for ensuring that high-quality scholarly and artistic works aligned with the journal’s mission, objectives, and thematic scope are published. The editors and the Editor-in-Chief make the final decision on whether a manuscript is accepted or rejected, taking into account the opinions of peer reviewers. The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board must make relevant and transparent decisions regarding the publication of manuscripts. They must not influence the decisions of peer reviewers and are responsible for ensuring fair evaluation, as well as for the publication of accepted manuscripts. Communication with the author is maintained by the copy editor, while the results of the peer review are communicated by the Editor-in-Chief.

 

Copyright and Conflict of Interest

The journal complies with applicable copyright laws. It is an open-access journal operating under the CC Licenses – Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

All parties must disclose any conflicts of interest that may prevent them from making objective decisions or that may influence their judgment. This applies equally to the Editor-in-Chief, editors, and peer reviewers. In the event of a conflict of interest between the Editor-in-Chief, an editor, or a peer reviewer and the author, the affected party must withdraw from the review process.

 

Corrections and Retractions

If a request for correction arises in connection with submitted manuscripts or already published materials, it must be corrected immediately—provided that technical conditions allow it.

In cases of plagiarism or fraud, the manuscript or already published material must be fully retracted. The publisher and the editors do not support or encourage such conduct in any form; on the contrary, they explicitly prohibit it and distance themselves from it in accordance with the principles of academic ethics and general moral standards.

Complaints Handling

The editorial office of the journal takes all complaints seriously and investigates them. Complaints may be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, whose contact details are available in the journal’s imprint. The Editor-in-Chief evaluates the complaint; if it is relevant, they consult with the parties involved (author, Editorial Board, peer reviewers) and, where appropriate, arrange for the modification of the publication concerned. If the complaint is irrelevant or does not require modification of the publication, the complainant will be informed accordingly. In all other matters, applicable legal regulations shall prevail.
