Conservation strategies in the Hortobágy: results of the Egyek-Pusztakócs LIFE-Nature grassland restoration project
Abstract
Conservation strategies usually appear in practice as large scale (national or regional) action plans. The Egyek-Pusztakócs LIFE-Nature rehabilitation project can serve as a good example of implementing conservation strategies at the landscape level. First we identified the most important threats to biodiversity in this area (fragmentation, degradation, homogenization, pollution), then aimed to reduce or eliminate their negative effects by planning and implementing several restoration or conservation management actions (grassland restoration, afforestation, grazing, controlled burning, mowing, extensive cultivation of lands for small mammals). Grassland restoration was conducted by low diversity seed mixtures on a total of 760 ha arable land and it resulted in two ecological corridors and several buffer zones to decrease the effects of fragmentation and pollution. A combined management of grazing and burning proved successful in opening up homogeneous reedbeds and increasing habitat diversity in marsh edges. Extensive cultivation of croplands resulted in a more diverse and more abundant assemblage of small mammals compared to intensively managed croplands, which favoured breeding and vagrant birds of prey and benefitted other bird species. Overall, the actions resulted in an increase of landscape-scale diversity and in a reduction of negative human impacts on the area.
