Abstract

Changing practices in Christian name giving in Bácska


This paper outlines the changes in Christian name giving practices of the Hungarian minority living in Bácska (Vajdaság), Serbia. The main considerations of the survey include the identification of the namer, some aspects of name connotation, the motivational background of name giving, the question of inherited names, differences due to denominational distribution, the custom of giving two names, and some current trends in Christian name giving. The author treats Christian name giving practices in mixed marriages and presents the details of trends in name giving practices of a small settlement in Central Bácska.
