New Formalism and Literary History
The essay recites some of the problems attendant on the writing of history and how these appear in writing literary history. It traces the debate between formalist and contextualist approaches to differing views on the historicity of literature and suggests that the incompatibility of such views has been exaggerated. It does so by noting how some versions of “new formalism” and genre theory have recast the opposition between formal and contextual approaches and ponders how new formalist insights may contribute to new ways of writing literary history.
Keywords: literary history, historicity of literature, new formalism
