Consumption estimation of battery electric buses considering line characteristics and temperature
Abstract
The battery electric buses (BEB) have a shorter range than diesel buses, thus they are not always able to perform the all precribed distance during a day. The bus turnaround planning and bus procurement decisions can also be supported by pre-determining the energy demand of the lines. In the course of the research, we developed an energy-based consumption
estimation method that also takes into account the uncertainties influencing consumption (ambient temperature, topography, stopping distance, passenger load). The novelty of the method is that instead of the current consumption data, it takes into account the dynamic energy consumption of the vehicle and the performance of other energy consumers (eg
cooling-heating system, air compressor). The method was used and validated in a case study. The minimum energy consumption is determined taking into account the largest consumers. We found that the estimated data correlated with the measured data, they show a deviation of 5% from the measured data.
