Abstract

This article aims to introduce the first phase of the Türr István research conducted at the former Department of Ideology (later Department of Social Sciences) of the Baja Higher Water Management Technical School, and to provide an overview of the related activities of the research leader, Gábor Faludi. The largest extra-budgetary work undertaken by the Department was supported from its inception by Imre Dégen. Its content was formally established in a contract dated 23 February 1968 between the National Water Office and the Department of Ideology of the Higher Water Management Technical School. A historiographical overview of the topic is made possible through the analysis of newly available archival sources and contemporary extra-budgetary work logs. An additional, explicit objective of our study is to contribute further evidence of Imre Dégen’s dedication to preserving historical memory and his commitment to the development of higher-level technical and water management education in Baja. The timeliness of the topic is underscored by the Türr István Memorial Year: the former freedom fighter was born 200 years ago, on 11 August 1825, in the town of Baja.

Author Biography

Gábor Albert, University of Szeged, Faculty of Agriculture

Gábor Albert is a historian and college professor. He completed his PhD studies at the ELTE BTK Doctoral School of 19th-20th Century Hungarian History in 2003, and in 2016 he habilitated in educational sciences at the Eszterházy Károly College in Eger. He is a college professor at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Szeged, head of the Fekete Gyula Institutional History Research Program and Institutional History Research Group. At the Faculty of Water Sciences of the National University of Public Service, he conducts complex historical research on the predecessor institutions of the Faculty. His research areas: history of agricultural education, history of water affairs, institutional history. He has been a member of the Hungarian Hydrological Society since 2023.
