Abstract
This paper focuses on one of the most critical aspects of educational surveys: participant selection – where we truly excel at making mistakes. I will demonstrate how we can arrive at misleading conclusions even in basic descriptive statistical analyses. Errors made during sampling practically guarantee that our results will lead to incorrect interpretations. We will go through the most common mistakes we tend to make when aiming for a representative sample. Beyond highlighting these pitfalls, I will also offer a few practical tips – for those who might actually want to avoid them. The irony is intentional, as despite often knowing what we should do, we somehow manage to fall into the same traps over and over again.
