The history and use of handcuffs in the prison service
Abstract
In 2025, Act CVII of 1995 on the Prison Service marks its 30th anniversary. Chapter IV of the Act contains the general rules governing the use of coercive measures, as well as a list of the individual coercive measures. The aim of this publication is to introduce the reader to one of the most significant coercive measures – handcuffs – on the occasion of this anniversary. The study presents in detail the history of handcuffs, the types currently in use, and future directions for development.
