Employment in the economic companies of the Prison Service

Abstract

“Work” existed centuries ago as a form of punishment (for example: gall-slavery, forced labour), but the antecedents of organized prison labour started at the end of the 18th century and in the beginning of the 19th century. The employment of detainees, including working, is based on a number of important aspects, one of which is the obligation of the prisoner to contribute to the cost of his detention, the other aspect is that the employment of prisoners is one of the important tools for reintegration into the work-based society. If these aspects are realized, prison enforcement can meet the social and governmental expectation of full employment of detainees, thus helping the Prison Service to become self-sufficient and self-sustaining.
