Environmental awareness and sustainability – Questions and answers through the lens of the hungarian prison system

Abstract

The European Climate Policy was undoubtedly the most important topic of the 2019. EU elections. Accordingly, the EU Parlament elected a committee whose main objective was to create and implement the European Green Agreement (hereinafter: Grean Deal or GD). Climate neutrality by 2050 was the backbone of the new Commission’s package of proposals, to which all EU countries must contribute. If possible, it should be achieved in all areas of society to think in an environmentally conscious way, including in the prison system. Prisons are similar to cities in many ways, only on a smaller scale. They have independent energy transport, telecommunications, enviromental protection-education, agriculture and many other „sectors”. The greatest potential of the prison institutes is human resources. So in general, if we can develop a city ecologically smaller footprint, we can also develop the same method in a prison as well
