Falling or stilling?
Abstract
The present article gives a brief account of a three-year research. The basis of our research was to learn about the life paths of
multiple recidivist offenders. The theory, which has long been accepted in criminology, that risk factors accumulating in the life course strongly predestine a criminal career, has been confirmed. In the second period of the study, we examined the lifepaths of people who grew up in similarly disadvantaged circumstances but still stayed away from deviant lifestyles and successfully adapted to societal expectations. Psychology calls them resilient, and the phenomenon is called resilience. We were looking for the answer to what factors might play a role in these “success stories”. To what extent does social-conform well-being depend on individual and environmental factors?
