Managing and operating a secure prison from a prison governor’s perspective – Complex demonstration of theory and practice

Abstract

The safe and secure operation of the prisons is a basic social expectation. For the secure operation of the prison service it’s essential to get to know the basic concepts concerning security and all the circumstances that influence and endanger safety. The basis of the secure operation is the identification of the threatening factors, defining to what extent these factors endanger security, and how we need to react during our task execution. In the current situation of the labour market, the technical support to the prison staff is a priority. The key of a prison’s secure operation is the adequate service of the correctional personnel, therefore it is very important to support their work. I summarize the concepts and circumstances mentioned above, describe the conditions of a penal institution’s secure operation, the realization and development of these conditions, and the expectation for improvements, and their results.
