Basic principles for the design of modern prisons
Abstract
Over time, the ancient institution of the prison, like any public institution, has followed the functional, legislative, technical and aesthetic expectations of the given age. Today, the prison building has become a complex machine with the same complexity as a hospital. The prison building has to comply with many domestic and international regulations, technical standards and statutory requirements. In addition the building must express through architectural means to its environment, society and the users of prison building the modern principles of prison enforcement from prevention to reintegration. The basic principles of modern prison design can be derived from the basic principles and practical application of prison, framed by the notions of imprisonment and normalization.
