Abstract

One of the oldest professional journals in Hungary is the Bányászai és Kohászati Lapok (BKL1), the first issue of which was published in Selmecbánya2 on 15 January 1868. The journal was started and funded by Antal Péch, the departmental adviser of the mining and metallurgy department of the new Hungarian Ministry of Finance, who formulated his objectives as follows: “The purpose of this journal is to discuss ideas in the field of mining and its auxiliary sciences together with presenting interesting phenomena, experience and experiments in Hungary when also revealing the geology of certain regions. The BKL also aims at describing our mining and metallurgical business besides publishing drawings of the machinery and buildings used in these activities. Furthermore, it will present the most remarkable foreign mines, smelters, inventions, experience and phenomena of all interest. In addition, we will follow the marketability of our mining products and the indications of literary products interested in our profession – all these things considered, I believe that I may safely say, in agreement with our esteemed readers, that the goal of our journal is a salutary one, and if it accomplishes its purpose, our enterprise will be a useful one.”
