Cultural Challenges in the Course of Translation
Abstract
During the past decades we could observe a growing number of empirical surveys and scholarly research regarding the field of intercultural studies. The results of these contribute to the theoretical framing and practical applications of the discipline considerably – providing a better understanding of its significance. For understanding a given culture, the command of its language is, in principle, not a prerequisite but definitely an advantage. While studying a language and its grammatical rules without knowing its culture is theoretically possible, using it effectively requires cultural know-how. For valid and efficient linguistic transfer (translation and interpretation) intercultural knowledge is an imperative. In human interactions – in linguistic transfer as well – a new approach has surfaced by the introduction of the concept of intercultural competence. This discussion elaborates on the relation of language and culture, its role inlinguistic transfer illustrated mainly by examples from Hungarian and Japanese.
