Family names and their variants in registers of village Balinka (1757–1830)

Standardization of written name forms in the registers of village Balinka (Fejér county) lasted from 1757 (the year when the German settlers started to arrive in the village) to 1830. The author investigates all the family names appearing in the registers of births, marriages and deaths in the period. Many, sometimes surprising name forms came into existence owing to native Hungarian priests working in a foreign language environment: one of the most important causes of noting family names in repeatedly different forms was misinterpretation. Identification of name forms could only be performed with respect to baptismal practices: being a godparent was permanently acknowledged as real kinship among the villagers. In the list of the investigated names, variants closest to today’s official name forms are capitalized, other variants are given in alphabetical order with reference to the standardized name form.
