Commissioned by the New Hungarian String Quartet, premiered by the Kolisch Quartet
The Journey of Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 6 from the Desk to the Podium
Abstract
Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 6 was commissioned in 1939 by the New Hungarian Quartet led by Zoltán Székely, but it was first performed in 1941 by the Kolisch Quartet, to whom the work is dedicated. This study presents the chain of events behind it in more detail than any other publication on the subject, using sources not previously (well) known. The study revisits how the outbreak of the Second World War affected Bartók’s and Székely’s plans and the completion of the String Quartet No. 6 itself. It also discusses why Bartók offered the work to the Coolidge Foundation and then subsequently withdrew his offer, as well as the agreement between Bartók, Rudolf Kolisch and Ralph Hawkes regarding the world premiere of the work and the extent to which it was ultimately realized. The paper will also consider how the Roth Quartet is related to all of this.References
