Abstract

Road safety has increased significantly over the last decade. The number of people killed in road accidents has also dropped significantly, although this trend has slowed down over the past few years, with the total number of personal injuries stagnating. However, the number of accidents involving cyclists has increased compared to all traffic accidents in a few years, which can be explained by a large increase in cycling traffic. Since 2011, the Road Safety Audit method has become more and more widespread among road safety investigations, as the Hungarian Government Decree (176/2011 (VIII.31)), based on the EU directive makes its use mandatory for motorways, certain parts of the national main road network, and roads with a cross-sectional traffic volume larger than 10,000 E/day. In general, it is not mandatory for the development of cycling facilities, but they have been made mandatory for bicycle-friendly developments in the call for applications for sustainable urban transport projects under codes TOP-3.1.1-15 and TOP-3.1.1-16. As a result, many cycling facilities have been audited. In our article, by way of examples, we review the typical bicycle safety problems connected to cycle-friendly solutions that are repeated in the country. In the conclusion, we offer  suggestions for changing the direction of development in order to disseminate the solutions we consider safe.
