The Wastewater as an untapped resource – our situation and what needs to be done

Abstract

From a hydrological perspective, the climate is changing unfavourably for us; but at the same time, we use declining water resources, and in some places, we overuse them. The use of wastewater and polluted waters (rainwater, urban runoff) as potential resources should and must be investigated. In Hungary, approximately 687.4 million m3 of water is extracted annually by water utility providers, of which 481.1 million m3 is utilized (sold), and of this, industry requires 105 million m3 of water. Of the 687.4 million m3 of extracted water, 561.2 million m3 of treated wastewater is generated; therefore, there is ample potential in terms of quantity to meet the water needs of industry (105 million m3). By implementing appropriate strategies, dialogues and actions, the burden on valuable drinking water resources can be greatly reduced. This is not an easy task, but it is not impossible either. The article examines this issue, briefly presenting the example of Debrecen.

Ferenc Gorján, Debrecen Waterworks Ltd.

FERENC GORJÁN is a civil engineer (PTE), a certified infrastructure civil engineer (BME), a water supply and sewerage engineer (BME), and a certified economic engineer (NKE). Based on his results in the National Vocational Study Competition at the water technician department of the Dráva Valley Secondary School in Barcs in 2004, he began his career as a scholarship holder of the Transdanubian Regional Waterworks Company in 2008, first in the physical staff, then moving up the ranks to become a plant management dispatcher, plant management center group leader, plant manager, technical service manager, and finally technical operations department manager. In addition to his managerial duties, during his entire DRV career - among many others - his main professional duties were plant management, water loss reduction, and network hydraulic modeling. As of 2020, as a result of a multi-stage selection process, he is the CEO of Debreceni Waterworks Company. In addition to complex corporate governance, its key task is to prepare the water utility infrastructure and organization for the change in scale, paying special attention to water resource management, water base protection, water quality protection, and the integration of circular economy elements in order to ensure the sustainability of municipal water management.
